Find the existing dominate color that you would like to use, or wish to keep in the room. For an exterior, it could be the color of the brick, stone, shutters, or roof. For the interior, it could be the color of your sofa, flooring, or window treatments.
Determine the feeling you wish to create for your room or entire home. Warm colors such as red, yellow, orange, and beige can create an energizing mood. They can help warm a room that has less natural lighting. Cool paint colors such as blue, green, violet, and gray can provide a serene feel and add spaciousness to small spaces. Always consider the balance between deeper and lighter colors.
Consider the complexity of the color scheme you wish to choose. There are 3 main color schemes to choose from.
Monochromatic Schemes: Are based on one hue, and varies in value from lightness to darkness and saturation (the amount of color). An example is using a dark blue with a pale blue and pure blue in one room. See the Berry shades picture to the right of this paragraph.
Analogous Schemes: Use no more than 3 similar colors in combination. An example is using red with orange and yellow.
Complementary Schemes: Are based on opposing or contrasting colors. By using this paint color scheme you can choose both warm and cool colors for your room or area. Examples would be using burgundy with 3 shades of green for the front door.

Color Tip When trying to use different paint colors in the same area, any two colors that are side by side on the color wheel will work well together. Any three colors side by side can be used for creating an analogous color scheme.
Love the paint color but not the shade? If you see a color you like however do not like the shade, you can use a color strip to find a lighter or darker color on that strip. "We liked the Berry Blush color, however is was not dark enough, so we kept the berry hue and chose a paint one shade darker for the walls and a lighter paint shade for the ceiling" - This creates a monochromatic color scheme.
